NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Country singer-songwriter Willie Nelson and several fellow musicians were charged with misdemeanor drug possession by Louisiana police after a search of their tour bus on Monday turned up marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms.

State police spokesman Willie Williams said the bus was stopped early on Monday morning about 7 miles (12 km) east of Lafayette, Louisiana, for a routine commercial inspection, and a state trooper smelled marijuana inside the bus.

State Police seized about 1-1/2 pounds (0.7 kg) of marijuana and two-tenths of a pound (91 grams) of mushrooms from the bus, Williams said.

Nelson and four other passengers on the bus were cited for possession and released, while the driver had his commercial driving privileges suspended in addition to being cited for possession. Nelson faces possible jail time of up to six months and an unspecified fine, police said.

"There was no trouble whatsoever," Williams said. "They were all cooperative."

A spokesman for Nelson said she had no information about the arrest.

Nelson, 73, has been an advocate for the legalisation of marijuana. He became famous in the 1970s as part of the outlaw country movement that included influences from rock, jazz and folk music.

If there's any Bob & Tom morning radio listeners out there, they need to play the song I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willy Again. Its a riot, plus its by someone like Toby Keith. He is known to have the best in the industry.

Its hard to get out of your head once you hear it. He did it with another country guy whose name escapes me. Where'd he find the tune? I'd love to have on my computer to send some friends.

In some ways Willie Nelson is the Frank Sinatra of country music; he's the essence of cool, very talented, links to the "underworld" and had his own Rat Pack (Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, etc.). I have always really liked his music and respected him as musician, not to mention his work on FarmAid. Some of you who don't think you've heard his music may have with Keller Williams version of "Pancho and Lefty" (he also wrote "Crazy" which was a huge hit for Patsy Cline). However, since country music has always had a rough time getting respect, where Frank could have been caught with a semi full of weed and shrooms and never seen a courtroom, Willie might see a day or two in lockup (see his problems with tax evasion a few years ago - the law has never liked him much).

Maybe he was storing the stuff to use in case his Alternate Feul Vehicle ran out of used cooking oil. Don't know about you, but a combination of that stuff has given me some lengthy trips in the past (OK, obvious punchline, but couldn't resist)

Good to see the La. police have their priorities straight. The people there accuse the feds and local gov't of doing too little for them, and here is a an incident that proves them wrong. The state police are keeping the good people of the state of louisiana safe from a dangerous 73 year old who smokes pot!! Way to go!! Who says we aren't safer than we were 5 years ago!!!

Look, i'll admit to not being intimately knowledgeable about Willie's songs. Whatever, it's my loss obviously. But there's just something wrong about this whole news story. It's a complete waste of tax dollars ... damn, there's a whole neighborhood of crack dealers around where i live, ruining people's lives (or providing the opportunity for people to ruin their own lives); however you want to look at it. Let the old man have his weed. It's absolutely bringing no harm to anyone, not even Willie. Jeez, i should be running this damn country.

How dare you question authority during a state of war built on lies. You're either with the us or you're with the terrorists!

And oh yeah, our brave billionaires must protect their property, I mean this country, by tracking all your visits and posts, erowid.org and all -- and leverage that information for behavioral marketing or coercion. But then again, God is the best of planners, so we're in good hands!

Yeah but you know how " they are". Even so, I'm sure he'll get considerably less than the average person and considerably less than he would have 20 + years ago. Times are getting better I think beleive it or not.

Doesn't matter if you're into his tunes or not, trust me, he's COOL. Saw a show once on a weeknight so at the end we left but a friend of mine stayed because Willie signs autographs at the end of the show. Well apparantly he didn't just sign a handful and say goodbye ( which would be totally normal, cool to even sign a couple ). No, he stayed forever, until everyone who wanted one got one. Now if that aint cool I don't know what is.

I've seen Willie almost as many times a I've seen the Dead, got a bunch of autographs too and each time I did he didn't make me feel as if I were bothering him. Willie truly loves his job AND his fans. I think that cop could have let 'em slide if he wanted to. I mean, COME ON! Busting entertainers for having a little grass and shrooms for their own use in their own bus is nothing short of rediculous. Hope they don't make an example out of him and hand out a harsh sentence. Just look what the IRS did to him some years ago.
FREE WILLIE!!!

They'll probably all get fines, unless they get cited with some sort of intent-to-deal charge (it was over a pound after all). Plus, you have to keep in mind that Louisiana has a strange, old, French common law legal system, so who knows how they treat this stuff now. That being said, I hope he just gets a fine or less, because no one whould be arrested for marijuana possession. Even if it's like a hundred pounds and the Defendant lives 2 blocks from a playground. Period.
